Students of The Martial Artist Foundation Progress through 10 stages of gup (student) level training before promotion to Dan level (Black Belt). At each gup a student earns 4 progress stripes indicating that he/she has met the requirements for progress. The 4 progress stages between gup levels focus attention to specific areas of developement.
(1) Hand Techniques (2) Foot Techniques (3)
One Step Sparring (self-Defense) (4) Poomse (forms)
Students receive a Rank requirement insert for their training portfolio in order to track their short and long term goals and achievement through the gup levels of training. The Training Portfolio is an integral part of TMAF training and a student cannot progress without completing his/her portfolio. When all 4 progress levels have been completed the student is ready to be promoted to a new colored belt level. He/she receives an "Intend to promote" sheet that needs to be completed by parents and school teachers indicating that the student is performing according to acceptable standards of excellence in his/her responsibilities as a part of his family and as a citizen at school. Once completed this sheet is turned in with the appropriate fees and his/her portfolio for review and a testing date to be established. Generally rank testing is held at the end of every month for those students who have completed all the necessary requirements and turned in the documentation for testing.
